Interface Masters Announces 1.28Tbps OCP Proposed Switch based on Broadcom’s StrataXGS® Trident II

Niagara 2948-12XL delivers modular high port density switch with an x86 Control Plane Processor

San Jose, CA, December 17th, 2013 – Interface Masters Technologies, an industry leader in high speed networking systems, today announced an Open Computing Project (OCP) proposed switch, the Niagara 2948-12XL-OCP. This high port density, modular switch can be configured with up to 72 ports of 10GbE or 48 ports of 10GbE and up to 12 ports of 40GbE in a 1U form factor. The system is based on Broadcom’s StrataXGS® Trident II switch chip with 1.2Tbps of bandwidth, non-blocking technology, low latency and can handle up to 960Gbps of traffic. To enable standard and server class Linux based operating systems in the Open Switch Platform, the default Control & Application processor module is based on a quad-core x86 AMD Embedded G-Series SOC. This system is targeted to be used as a 10GbE Top of Rack (ToR) or Leaf Switch and is compliant with version 1.0 of the OCP Open Network Switch Specification. The Niagara 2948-12LX-OCP is built for optimal versatility enabling multiple fiber media configurations for QSFP+ and SFP+ connectivity.

The high capacity switching platform supports an optional Data Plane Processor (DPP) Module to enable specialized network functions such as L4-L7 processing based on Broadcom XLP432 CPU. By enabling the use of embedded as well as server class standard Linux distributions as the foundation for the network operating systems that run on this platform, a plethora of software defined networking (SDN) applications such as network automation, network monitoring, network instrumentation, network virtualization as well as specialized network functions can be deployed.

The proposed Open Switch Platform is optimized for cost and power and meets the requirements for Leaf and Spine Switches that can be used by large data centers, cloud computing and telecom service providers. It has been designed in a 1U form factor to maximize the space in the rack.

“This new launch takes white-box switching one step further and re-iterates that the standardization of networking hardware is here to stay,” said Reza Malekzadeh, VP of Business, Cumulus Networks. “This is a boon to the OCP White Box vision and also supports ONIE (Open Network Install Environment) and the advancement of networking in the modern data center.”

Based on Broadcom’s Trident II chip, the Niagara 2948-12XL is able to have high packet buffer utilization and burst absorption performance using innovative traffic load-based intelligent and dynamic allocation schemes. Utilizing the Trident II chip, this switch is able to have one of the highest bandwidth and port density in the industry, which will enable more affordable and higher performing networks at an unprecedented number of server and storage endpoints, applications and users.

“We are proud to work with Broadcom and introduce this high bandwidth and cost optimized platform to support the OCP initiative”, stated Ben Askarinam founder and CEO of Interface Masters, “The Niagara 2948-12XL CPU flexibility will allow companies to adapt third party software or develop their own switching stack while keeping the hardware cost to a minimum. Interface Masters’ local manufacturing allows support for low and mid volume and flexible configurations which will enable even small corporations to adopt the OCP architecture.”

“AMD is excited to collaborate with Broadcom and Interface Masters to power the Niagara 2948-12XL-OCP switch with our Embedded G-Series SOC,” said Kamal Khouri, director of embedded products, AMD. “The AMD Embedded G-Series SOC provides the CPU power for the control plane protocols while leaving substantial headroom for application expansion, all while running at low-power and at the right cost.”

The Niagara 2948-12XL provides:

  • Broadcom Trident II, Non-blocking switching architecture
  • Less than 500 nanosecond latency
  • Up to 72 ports of 10GE/1GE, up to 960Gbps throughput
